Kelly Kil

Athlete of the Month

June 2017

We chose Kelly as the member of the month for June 2017 due to her determination to work on her weaknesses. She is always coming in early to work on her pull-ups and staying after the WOD to work core strength. Most recently Kelly came to ‘goat’ day and worked on her strict pull-ups and got one!

She is a great example of how a ‘normal’ person – she is a stay-at-home mom – who has never done CrossFit before can come in and get stronger and more powerful. Through repeated hard work over time she can now do things that she never thought she would be able to do and we wanted to take a moment to acknowledge her efforts!

My name is Kelly Kil. I am 36 years old and I am a stay at home mother of three.

I was already curious about joining a Crossfit gym and my husband Charles Kil, owner of Lynx Barbell was sponsoring Lara Sturm. Charles told me that Lara and her husband Dan had a great box in Johns Creek.  I do it now because I love the community at Johns Creek and I enjoy challenging myself.  Since starting Crossfit, I have a lot more energy and I love the way my body has changed.

I thought ‘Wow – this is a different type of workout from what I was used to doing by myself at a normal gym!’ I was very excited because I knew that Crossfit was going to give me the challenge I needed physically and mentally.

I enjoy the WODs that the instructors program for us, they are always challenging. I actually like to get hot and sweaty during a workout. I like the competition and I enjoy working on my weaknesses.

Before CrossFit I was unable to do push-ups.  But now I can do several in a row! Most recently it was doing my first competition at Battle on the Creek and being part of a team representing CrossFit Johns Creek!

My favorite is deadlift while my least favorite are cleans. My favorite thing to do is rowing. I do not enjoy running but I do feel good after I finish!

Believe it or not, I love doing wall balls. When “Karen” was programmed, I came in with some hesitation but I did it and felt really good about the fact that I was able to do it. I enjoy challenges. I don’t really have a least favorite.

I want to increase the weight on my barbell movements and I want to get better at pushing myself a little harder in this area.  I am working on setting some goals to strive for.

Note: She had a goal of getting a strict pull-up and she just got that!

In the gym, I have more confidence and I really feel good about myself. The impact for me outside of the gym is having more energy to be able to keep up with my kids.

I really enjoy grocery shopping and cooking for my family. I love shopping LuluLemon at Avalon.

I have more patience with myself and I’m more open-minded with learning new things.

I would tell them to just go!! Get into the gym and don’t be intimidated. They will love it.

I want to thank my husband Charles for giving me that push to meet Dan and Lara and to give CFJC a try.  The community at this box is the best.
