Marc Abramow

Athlete of the Month

January 2017

Dr. Marc Abramow was chosen as our member of the month for January because he has been training with us for four years now during which time he has been very consistent and is always working on his weaknesses and mobility. He always comes in with a great attitude and scales appropriately when needed.

He often comes to a morning class and puts up a score that other ‘bro’ athletes will see as one to beat. Dr Marc. competes several times a year in local CrossFit team competitions and shows great sportsmanship and places respectfully. We love that he uses his fitness in other activities such as skiing and scuba diving! His humble demeanor does not quite match his nickname we have given him: Dr. Swole!

Marc Abramow, 50 (soon to be 51), Emergency Medicine Physician.

I had been working out at Just Fitness for a few years and was getting bored doing the same thing over and over again. I needed to find something new. I would drive by CFJC everyday on my way to work every day & thought it might be fun. I heard about the heavy weights and crazy workouts at Crossfit, so I was a bit intimidated. It took a while, but I finally made the decision to check it out & see what this Crossfit thing was all about. I came in one morning for an orientation & did my Intro benchmark workout with Dan. After my first week I knew I found what I was looking for.

I’ve been Crossfitting now for 4 years & love every minute of it. My interest and motivation are as strong as the day I started. I’ve stayed with crossfit because the workouts are great, the people are great, and it’s always a good time.

My first WOD was Loredo. I entered the box on a Saturday morning, not knowing anyone & worrying that I’d totally embarrass myself. Several people introduced themselves & helped me feel welcome. I Rx’d my first WOD, which was a Hero WOD & had a pretty decent time. I thought, “I can do this.” I was hooked.

Working out with a great group of people. Friendly competition. And it’s fun.

Getting my Muscle Ups was a pretty big deal for me, but I’d have to say being named athlete of the month takes the prize.

Favorites: squats, bench press, deadlifts.

Least favorite: Double Unders.

I’m not sure that I have a favorite WOD, but I tend to like the longer WODs; I really enjoyed doing 12 Days of Christmas recently.

My least favorite WOD is Fran.

My Crossfit goals are to get stronger, faster, and improve my overall fitness. I’d like to do a 400 lb. deadlift and get my Double Unders, too.

CFJC has helped me become fitter and stronger than ever. Age is just a number. Crossfit keeps me feeling young.

My favorite activity outside of Crossfit, besides being with my family, is skiing. I get one good trip each winter- not nearly enough to satisfy my obsession with it. I also love SCUBA diving, but only get do that that every couple of years.

Crossfit has taught me that I can do so much more physically if I push through the mental barriers. This helps build physical strength which in turn builds mental strength; it’s a cycle and you can’t have one without the other. Also, I’ve learned that the only person I’m really competing with is myself.

I would tell them to go for it and not to be intimidated because once you try it you won’t be able to get enough of it.
