I was a very skinny kid, barely did any exercise outside the ball games, not to mention I hated exercise in general. As an adult, my metabolism slowed down, and the pounds started to add on, until I reached 240lb in my mid 30s. At the start of 2014, my wife decided she wanted to lose weight, and I joined her effort, also starting a Couch-to-5K challenge. Within 6 months, I lost almost 50lb, and was running 10Ks routinely. I also added some strength work using dumbbells. The routine of it was boring, and I was starting to lose motivation.
One day I stumbled on the movie “Fittest on Earth” on Netflix, that follows the 2015 CrossFit games. I knew that this was what I was looking for and signed up for an intro class at CFJC. I quickly learned that CrossFit is first and foremost humbling. Everything was challenging, but I fell in love with the sport, the community, and the continuous drive to improve. I’ve learned a lot about my body the past four years, how to listen to it, and how to manage my fitness. A few injuries have also taught me a lot.
When the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to workout at home, I realized that I wanted to share what I’ve learned with others, and help others improve their fitness and quality of life. As a coach I love finding the small things that improve performance quickly, but also helping others with mindset and how to approach a big challenge.
